Forum Editorial: Minnesota legislators face crisis

01/07/2009
Minnesota legislators gather this week in St. Paul to deal with a budget crisis of historic proportions. The deficit could top $6 billion, and at this point there are no clear or easy fixes.

Their Opinion: Big shoes to fill in Senate

01/07/2009
When the new Congress began this week, a great many familiar faces were missing. While the most notable absentees are the new president- and vice president-elect, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, something tells me we will see plenty of them in coming months.

Attention given to Fill the Dome misguides community priorities

01/07/2009
I think it’s great that area youth have been given positive attention for addressing hunger in our community. However, I am disappointed that there has been so much attention on a short-term charitable activity.

North Dakota’s driving fines a joke

01/07/2009
I enjoyed reading Bill Cornog’s letter to the editor on Dec. 30. His crash-course in Fargo driving should be available at our visitor’s center. I have traveled the roads and highways in 39 states and many of America’s major cities and I must agree that Fargo has more than its fair share of bad drivers.

Corn chips, potato chips part of a ripoff

01/07/2009
In a recent letter, Michael Pick asks “Why is the price of chips continuing to rise’? There is only one reason. Greed.

Parents should err on side of caution

01/07/2009
Yes, the deaths of the children involved in automobile accidents are a tragedy. One question I may ask is, “Do we really need a law telling us that 15-year-olds should not be driving in such conditions?” We as parents should realize that just because we can we do not necessarily have to do as said.

A brief requiem for 2008

Lloyd Omdahl
There’s a lot of unfinished business left over from 2008 that deserves some sort of closure. Or at least a requiem.

Future has hope written all over it

James Ferragut
The New Year begs that we take stock of what was and prepare for what will be. For Americans, though, I’m not sure we spend a lot of time looking back at the “what was” part.

May ’09 be better than ’08

Ross Nelson
Farewell, 2008. Whatever else can be said about the year, it sure wasn’t boring. The gods of the marketplace tumbled and “their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew” as we entered the worst recession since the Great Depression.

Hillerman knew what it meant to be outsider in one’s own land

Jane Ahlin
Tony Hillerman was a big guy – tall, with impressive girth. Even though I had seen pictures of him on the jackets of his mystery novels, his actual size surprised me when I saw him in person. Next to his wife, Marie, who is a slender woman, he looked particularly large.

Hey, you OK up in frigid Fargo?

Jack Zaleski
My friends in various parts of the country watch The Weather Channel just to see how cold it is where I live. Most of them are natives of southern New England, where a cold winter day is 20 degrees; where a snowstorm is a few inches that melts quickly into road slush. Winter? They ain’t got a clue.
